The ACLU of Kansas exhausts all possible options before pursuing litigation, which is a last resort. Writing open letters to public officials holds them accountable and can often resolve issues without getting the courts involved. 

City of Leavenworth re: proposed homelessness ban

The ACLU of Kansas and the National Homelessness Law Center have sent a letter to the City of Leavenworth regarding their proposed camping ban. We informed the Mayor, Mayor Pro-Tem, and Commissioners that proposed ordinance fails to follow the 9th Circuit’s ruling in Martin v.

North Lyon County USD 251 Title IX Violations

The ACLU of Kansas has sent a letter to North Lyon County School District (USD 251) urging them to create policies and procedures protecting LGBTQ+ rights. On July 30, 2021, we sent a letter acknowledging their commitment to creating these policies.

City of Merriam RE: Panhandling Ordinance

In March 2021, the ACLU of Kansas and National Homelessness Law Center sent a letter to the Mayor Ken Sissom of Merriama and the City Council regarding a recently approved ordinance prohibiting pedestrians from standing on certain medians.
