In April, the ACLU was contacted by a board member of the Shawnee Heights USD 450 Board of Education regarding a proposed policy of randomly drug testing students engaged in extracurricular activities. The board voted against the policy on March 27, but plans to revisit the issue at a board meeting on May 15.

The ACLU has also been contacted by concerned community members in Nickerson USD 309 and Wamego USD 320 regarding the proposal of similar drug testing programs in their respective districts.

In response, Doug Bonney, legal director of the ACLU of Kansas, sent open letters to board members of all three districts outlining the general problems with school drug testing programs. The letters cite concerns with inaccurate test results, the steep financial cost of program maintenance, and the general failure of school drug testing programs to identify students who are most at risk of drug abuse or effectively deter drug use among the general student population.
