On March 28, 2024, the ACLU of Kansas sent a letter to Governor Laura Kelly urging a veto on SB 233, which is even more extreme and misinformed than similar bills in other parts of the country.
Since 1936, the ACLU has been a force for LGBTQ+ rights, and we are proud to keep that fight alive in Kansas. Even as the nation moves forward toward equality for all people, there are still many who seek to create unnecessary obstacles for people in the LGBTQ+ community.
Kansas is a state filled with people unafraid of asking each other hard questions and continually pushing one another for better answers. There is a landscape of smart, committed people who are tenacious and ready to fight for what’s right — even when the odds are stacked against them.
HB 2755 mandates minimum bond premiums, imposes restrictive payment requirements, and requires physical presence for bond posting, which dsicriminates against those with lesser means and potentially extend pretrial detentions.
