Originally intended to fight organized crime, Civil Asset Forfeiture allows law enforcement to seize property from citizens. Because the seizure action is against the property itself rather than the property owner, the property owner does not retain the same rights in court that they would if the action was against them as an individual. This document is intended to explain Civil Asset Forfeiture and recommends action to correct this harmful practice.
