On Monday, the ACLU of Kansas, together with law firm Spencer Fane LLP, will begin the final phase of a challenge to the Kansas Highway Patrol’s infamous “Two-Step” and practice of unlawfully detaining drivers without adequate reasonable suspicion.

The frenzy of attacks on transgender people this session by extremist Kansas lawmakers are truly stunning in their cruelty -- and also do not align with the views of the majority of Kansans.

Extremist Kansas lawmakers had mixed results this week in their attempts to override Governor Laura Kelly’s vetoes on several bills attacking transgender Kansans, voting rights, and abortion access—all with broad and troubling implications for civil liberties. 

The ACLU of Kansas, El Centro, the League of Women Voters Topeka-Shawnee County, the League of Women Voters Wichita-Metro, Loud Light, and MORE2 will combine efforts to empower Kansas voters to increase access in their local communities,

We want transgender youth to know they are not alone, and we will continue to vehemently support their right to be their true selves in every aspect of their lives.

New research commissioned by the ACLU of Kansas shows broad support in Kansas across the political spectrum for policies that ensure access to vote. Kansans believe democracy in the state is under attack – and will hold elected officials accountable to protecting their access to the ballot box.

As Kansas legislators continue to advance anti-reproductive freedom and transgender rights bills, advocacy organizations and supporters are taking to the State Capitol to make their voices heard on Monday, March 6.

All of these bills still require action by the other chamber of the Legislature; the ACLU of Kansas calls on the Kansas Legislature to remember its duty to Kansans, uphold our shared values and the rights enshrined in the Constitution, and reject these bills attacking civil liberties.
