This is a blatant attack by the legislators on our justices, and it’s part of a decades-long pattern of politicians attempting to punish the judicial branch for issuing decisions on education and reproductive freedom that they disagree with."

“Attorney General Kris Kobach expressed last fall his deep yearning to politicize and usurp control from the Court. We should believe him when he says that his plan, made real in this proposed amendment, is retaliation against the Court for protecting reproductive freedom and education funding."

Extremist Kansas lawmakers had mixed results this week in their attempts to override Governor Laura Kelly’s vetoes on several bills attacking transgender Kansans, voting rights, and abortion access—all with broad and troubling implications for civil liberties. 

Abortion is on the ballot in Kansas on August 2, when an election will be held to determine whether we have power over our own bodies or whether the government can issue mandates to take away our bodily autonomy.

If the Supreme Court does indeed issue a majority opinion along the lines of the leaked draft authored by Justice Alito, the shift in the tectonic plates of abortion rights will be as significant as any opinion the Court has ever issued.
