The District Court of Douglas County will hold a hearing starting on September 29 in Doe v. State of Kansas, a state court challenge brought by transgender Kansans against a state law invalidating their state-issued driver’s licenses, barring them from making any further changes to the gender on their driver’s licenses, and barring them from using restrooms consistent with their gender.

A judge for the District Court of Douglas County has scheduled an evidentiary hearing beginning on September 29, 2026 on Plaintiff’s motion for a temporary injunction in Doe v. Kansas, a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of SB 244.

A judge for the District Court of Douglas County rejected a request for a temporary restraining order blocking enforcement of SB 244, a Kansas state law that immediately invalidated the driver’s licenses of transgender people across the state and which authorizes anyone to sue anybody they suspect of being transgender for using the “wrong” restroom in government buildings.

The Legislature has overridden the Governor’s veto on one of the most sweeping and intrusive anti-trans bills in the nation, SB 244.

“This bill is about forcing people into the wrong bathrooms and opening up all Kansans to scrutiny and gender policing by strangers."

Rather than accepting the decisions of the two highest courts in our state, Mr. Kobach is resorting to backroom attempts to change the law and shut the courts out of our government so he can have full, unchecked power.

The Kansas Supreme Court this week denied Attorney General Kris Kobach’s request to keep in place a district court order preventing transgender Kansans from getting driver’s licenses with accurate gender markers. Earlier this year, the Kansas Court of Appeals had issued a decision protecting transgender Kansans’ rights, which the attorney general had appealed. This week’s denial of that appeal means that the decision can go into effect Monday, October 6.
