The ACLU of Kansas reminds transgender Kansans that Mr. Kobach's "advisory opinion" about SB 180 is little more than bluster.

The ACLU of Kansas vehemently condemned a motion filed late Friday night by Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach, where he requested permission to no longer follow a 2019 federal court order requiring the state to issue birth certificates with corrected gender markers to transgender Kansans.

The frenzy of attacks on transgender people this session by extremist Kansas lawmakers are truly stunning in their cruelty -- and also do not align with the views of the majority of Kansans.

Extremist Kansas lawmakers had mixed results this week in their attempts to override Governor Laura Kelly’s vetoes on several bills attacking transgender Kansans, voting rights, and abortion access—all with broad and troubling implications for civil liberties. 

“We sincerely commend and thank Governor Kelly for consistently showing up and fulfilling her initial promise of allyship to the LGBTQ+ community when she took office in her first term."

We want transgender youth to know they are not alone, and we will continue to vehemently support their right to be their true selves in every aspect of their lives.

All of these bills still require action by the other chamber of the Legislature; the ACLU of Kansas calls on the Kansas Legislature to remember its duty to Kansans, uphold our shared values and the rights enshrined in the Constitution, and reject these bills attacking civil liberties.
