ACLU of Kansas response to U.S. Attorney claims about Southwestern Kansas raids

KANSAS — On Tuesday, U.S. Attorney Ryan Kriegshauser for the District of Kansas released a statement troubled by firsthand accounts of recent raids in southwestern Kansas.

In response, ACLU of Kansas Executive Director Micah Kubic had the following reaction:

“The U.S. Attorney encourages the people of southwestern Kansas to believe not what they've seen with their own eyes in their own neighborhoods, but rather what his office claims from hundreds of miles across the state in a press release the following week. Meanwhile, families and advocates in the community who witnessed these most recent abductions firsthand are dealing with the devastating aftermath. Kansans are seeing through these transparent attempts to turn neighbors against one another, and even if the U.S. Attorney finds them inconvenient, the facts are clear: masked, unidentified men are recklessly storming our streets, surrounding cars, separating parents from children, then disappearing them into ICE's creeping network of deplorable jails and prisons.

Kansas officials can and should be the firewall protecting our cities and counties against these federal intrusions and attacks by ending or refusing 287g agreements, by opting out of unnecessary so-called HALO ordinances, and by ensuring local resources stay focused on local needs.”
