A federal judge once called Leavenworth Detention Center “an absolute hell hole.” In a 2021 letter to federal officials, the ACLU of Kansas pointed to stabbings, suicides and homicides that occurred with “alarming frequency.”

Another two area restaurants were raided by ICE this week. As a refresher, here is a collection of resources from ACLU Kansas and Missouri and Advocates for Immigrant Rights and Reconciliation (AIRR).

An immigration advocacy group says the raids were carried out by Homeland Security Investigation agents about midday on Wednesday at El Toro Loco restaurants in Lenexa and Kansas City, Kansas.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas organized and hosted the event across the street from the Johnson County Courthouse. Micah Kubic, executive director of the ACLU of Kansas, said it was important the event happen in the week leading up to Independence Day.

Micah Kubic, executive director of the ACLU of Kansas, called out CoreCivic’s history as a prison operator, saying that it was notorious for violence and violations of human rights.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas says that if you are stopped by police, you should not attempt to run away, argue, resist or obstruct any officers.

"There are millions of people whose parents and grandparents were born in this country but born of immigrant parents," Kubic said. "So, the citizenship of millions and millions more people could be endangered."
