Disappointment doesn’t quite cover how we feel about the news that Gov. Kelly signed HB2717, a bill that contributes to an environment of fear, harassment, and intimidation for immigrants living in Kansas.
A Wyandotte County Judge has consolidated three ongoing redistricting cases, denied Kansas Secretary of State Scott Schwab’s motions to dismiss those cases, and ruled that the cases can proceed to trial. Trial is set to begin on all three cases at 9 a.m. Monday April 4, and runs through April 6.
The ACLU of Kansas and the Campaign Legal Center, along with pro bono assistance from Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer LLP, filed suit in Wyandotte County District Court Monday, seeking to block the recently enacted congressional redistricting map, claiming it is a partisan and racial gerrymander.
As we learned today that the Kansas Senate successfully over-rode Gov. Laura Kelly’s veto of the patently unfair Ad Astra redistricting map, we can’t say that we’re surprised, but we are disappointed.
