It should have become obvious to legislators during last year’s session that tossing teachers into jail just for teaching classic literature or health is a bad idea, hurts Kansas students, and raises serious constitutional issues to boot.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas called on lawmakers to quickly consider a new, bipartisan bill introduced today that would allow eligible Kansans to register and vote on Election Day.

A state court has struck down Kansas' two-tiered voter registration system, ruling that Secretary of State Kris Kobach's office overstepped its legal authority by creating a system that prevents federal form registrants from voting in state and local elections.

The governor's decision to issue this executive order is badly wrong - because it blames refugees for the terror from which they are fleeing, because it betrays Kansas values of hospitality and compassion, and because it is flies in the face of the laws of this country.

Gov. Brownback has opted to launch an “investigation” based on heavily edited videos that have no connection to Kansas doctors, Kansas clinics, or how reproductive healthcare is provided in the state. Such transparent harassment of women and doctors should be deeply distressing to all Kansans.

Allowing same-sex couples to marry—as the U.S. Supreme Court has now ruled is the law of the land in all 50 states—does not change that in any way, and so today’s Executive Order is unnecessary.

Representative Winn is being punished for speaking her mind on legislation before the committee – something the First Amendment is intended to protect against. If the investigative committee recommends action, many more legislators can expect to be silenced – and that’s bad for Kansans.
