The Kansas City Star Editorial Board examines what must be done to increase participation in our elections--and how the ACLU of Kansas and the Kansas Coalition for Citizen Participation aim to do it.

In the home county of the “king of voter suppression,” the American Civil Liberties Union announced Sunday a nationwide campaign to go on the offensive to expand voting rights.

“That is literally the thing he hates the most,” Faiz Shakir, National Political Director of the ACLU, said of Election Day Registration. “We’re going for it right there in his backyard.”

Kansas has once again taken center stage in the fight over voting rights in America.

"We have a secretary of state who’s abdicating his responsibilities by actively impeding the democratic process in Kansas, which is why we’re grateful that the Kansas Coalition for Citizen Participation is prepared to do his job for him."

The American Civil Liberties Union launches a national campaign Sunday to advance reform in 50 states to make it easier to vote.

This weekend in Lawrence, the ACLU will kick off a national campaign on voting rights called Let People Vote. The group chose Kansas because of the state’s strict voting policies pushed by Secretary of State Kris Kobach.
