The American Civil Liberties Union and federal public defenders sent a letter to the White House documenting their concerns. Beatings and stabbings were rampant, suicides were prevalent, sexual assault reports were discouraged, and the company failed to report the death of an inmate for six days.

CoreCivic, the second largest private prison company in America, is seeking to reactivate a shuttered facility in Leavenworth as a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center.

“Kansas’s system is the envy of the nation,” said Micah Kubic, the Executive Director of the ACLU of Kansas.“There are a bunch of other states that have adopted similar systems, but now the legislature wants to upend all of that.

Loud Light and ACLU of Kansas brought the Lawrence community together on Monday night to give updates on anti-trans legislation and groups that have helped combat the anti-trans rhetoric.

“This is a blatant attack by the legislators on our justices, and it’s part of a decades-long pattern of politicians attempting to punish the judicial branch for issuing decisions on education and reproductive freedom that they disagree with,” said Micah Kubic, executive director of ACLU of Kansas.

“This bill punishes Kansas voters for the basic logistics or troubles of the federal postal service,” said Micah Kubic, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas.

“What their actions say is that CoreCivic’s decision makers consider the SUP process and this city disposable,” said Esmie Tseng, communications director for the ACLU of Kansas.

Loud Light and the ACLU of Kansas are hosting "Beyond the Bills: Understanding Anti-Trans Legislation & Community Resources in Kansas" on March 31. The event will feature information about current bills that affect LGBTQ+ individuals.
