The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the ACLU of Kansas on Wednesday filed a lawsuit challenging the state over a recent law that was passed – blocking gender-affirming care for minors.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas and the national ACLU filed a lawsuit Wednesday in Douglas County District Court on behalf of a 16-year-old trans boy and a 13-year-old trans girl. The lawsuit argues the new law violates state constitutional rights for equal protection, personal autonomy

One panel from the Kansas chapter of the ACLU responded to the project with an image of a stick-figure family with a plaque that reads: “We want the freedom to live here,” according to the Washington Post.

Loud Light and ACLU of Kansas brought the Lawrence community together on Monday night to give updates on anti-trans legislation and groups that have helped combat the anti-trans rhetoric.

Opponents of the bill included the ACLU of Kansas, Equality Kansas and Loud Light Civic Action. Parents, teachers and students also spoke out against the bill.

Attorney D.C. Hiegert, civil liberties legal fellow for the ACLU of Kansas, said a decision from a Kansas Court of Appeals panel is expected this month.

Micah Kubic, executive director of the ACLU of Kansas, said the organization is engaged in emphasizing students’ rights to privacy and protection from harassment under civil rights law and the U.S. Constitution.
