We've been organizing in Wyandotte and Johnson County for Spanish language access at the ballot box. Both counties serve as some of the most diverse counties in Kansas. We've collected well over 1,000 signatures in less than a month from community members who support language access. Mayor Tyrone Garner presented a resolution to the Unified Government of Wyandotte County in October of 2024 calling on Secretary of State Scott Schwab to provide these materials. The proclamation received unanimous support from the other Commissioners. In May, we sent an open letter to Johnson County Commissioners and have started a petition. In this report, we examine how monetary bail in Sedgwick County, Kansas, disproportionately punishes poverty, deepens inequality, and challenges the promise of justice. Using data from 2023–2024, we explore who is being held, why they’re being held, how long they remain in jail, and what it costs them and the community. This report reveals how a system built on presumed innocence often delivers punishment before trial—especially to the poor, women, and communities of color—and outlines why reform is both urgent and achievable.
