“Unwarranted” Rally on Sept. 29 to Demand End to Local Agreements with ICE

WICHITA, Kan. - Community members from Wichita, Sedgwick County, and across the state will rally on Tuesday, September 29 to call on Wichita to end the “Unwarranted” 287(g) agreements with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). These agreements invite ICE’s reckless behavior into our cities and counties, and undermining the local resources meant to strengthen, protect, and serve our communities.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff Department signed a 287(g) agreement with ICE in late 2025. The City of Wichita’s police department does not currently have an agreement with ICE.

“Across the country and right here in Kansas, untrained and masked ICE agents are using violence and deadly force in our neighborhoods, attacking people based on what they look like, where they come from, or the language they speak,” said Micah Kubic, Executive Director of the ACLU of Kansas. “Separating families, arresting citizens and legal residents, and deporting people without their day in court doesn’t make us safer. Politicians and federal agents who are trying to instill fear, sow division, and suppress dissent do so to the detriment of our local resources, undermining the trust between local police and the communities they serve. Our communities are strengthened by our diversity and our ability to work together and show up for each other. Local officials can ensure that their residents all have the opportunity to feel safe and to be part of building thriving communities.”
