Attorney D.C. Hiegert, civil liberties legal fellow for the ACLU of Kansas, said a decision from a Kansas Court of Appeals panel is expected this month.

Micah Kubic, executive director of the ACLU of Kansas, called out CoreCivic’s history as a prison operator, saying that it was notorious for violence and violations of human rights.

GEO Group Chairman George Zoley said the company stands to gain up to $1 billion in additional revenue from detaining and surveilling undocumented immigrants.

“The Supreme Court should not be for sale to the highest bidder,” Hamby said. “If this passes, it will be a radical departure from Kansas’ longstanding commitment to judicial independence.”

“CoreCivic has never answered for the horrendous conditions and dangerous violence that peaked in 2021 and contributed to the closure of the Leavenworth facility,” warned the ACLU of Kansas.
