My life is rife with privilege, but the struggle with my sexuality has been my hardest battle, and in some ways it continues to be. I joined the ACLU with a monthly donation on the KU campus. I'd always loved the ACLU but just never got around to joining. After graduating in 2014, I worked for Grassroots Campaigns fundraising for the ACLU's Out For Freedom initiative which won marriage equality nationwide. I will always remember it as an honor to have been involved. On that historic day, June 26, 2015, for the first time, I felt unmitigated pride. Maybe for me it's because I find political identity indistinguishable from personal, but even with no husband, fiancé, or significant other to speak of, I feel affirmed. Love continues to win.
